Solar batteries allow households and businesses to store excess solar electricity so customers can use more of their own solar energy later in the day or during peak tariff periods.
Benefits
- Store excess solar power
- Use more self-generated energy
- Reduce grid reliance
- Improve energy independence
- Optional backup power depending on system design
Backup capability depends on the battery model, inverter, switchboard setup and backup circuit design. Not all batteries provide whole-home backup.
Eligible solar batteries under the STC scheme must be between 5 kWh and 100 kWh nominal capacity, and STCs can only be claimed on the first 50 kWh of usable capacity. The Commonwealth Cheaper Home Batteries Program provides an upfront discount for eligible battery systems, subject to program rules.
